Speeding to find treatments & cures for autoimmune diseases

AUTOimmunity Racing is accelerating research and studies to help diagnose, prevent and cure autoimmune related diseases. Founded in 2020 by the Relapsing Polychondritis Foundation, we believe that medical advancements made for one autoimmune disease can significantly accelerate advancements for other autoimmune diseases. Whether you are a newly diagnosed patient, spouse or significant other, parent or other family member of a patient, we are racing for you.

Learn about autoimmunity

Learn about autoimmunity

Autoimmunity encompasses a broad category of related diseases in which the person’s immune system attacks his or her own tissue.

The immune system normally guards against germs like viruses and bacteria and when it senses these in the body it sends out fighter cells to attack them. Normally the immune system can tell the difference between viruses and bacteria and your own cells but with an autoimmune disease, it releases antibodies that attack the healthy cells. Some autoimmune diseases target only one organ while others impact the whole body. There are over 100 known autoimmune diseases.

Doctors don’t know what causes these misfires in the immune system and some people are more likely to get an autoimmune disease than others. Approx. 80% of patients with autoimmune diseases are women. Some diseases are more common in certain ethnic groups while others run in families.

AUTOimmunity Racing is working to raise awareness about autoimmune diseases in order to support ongoing research to find treatments and cures.

“I was diagnosed with Relapsing Polychondritis about 3 years ago. It is a very debilitating and horrible disease. I thought I was going to die within 5 years but then I realized that I didn’t want to give up. That wasn’t going to be me. I was able to find good doctors to help me. I just want people who come behind me to have hope that there is still research going on and things are going to be better for them.

Jon Morley

Jon Morley fell in love with driving and speed at an early age. He honed his craft on his big-wheel and golf carts before finally getting into a proper racing kart at age 14. His family was living in Japan at the time, so Morley actually started his racing career on the same circuit as former F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi. Once his family moved back to the United States, Morley got serious about his karting and started winning races at the regional and national level.

An advertisement in Racer magazine led him to the Skip Barber Racing School, where he would ultimately do the bulk of his early racing in open wheel cars. Similar to karting, he won races at the regional and national level, which led to the biggest award of his young career, the Skip Barber “Big Scholarship”. The coveted scholarship was won the prior year by now-Indy Car Champion Ryan Hunter-Reay and was a huge prize for any up and coming driver. It provided a free season in the Barber Dodge Pro Series, which Morley contested in 2001. He scored one podium, three top-5’s and narrowly missed out on the Rookie Of The Year championship, falling from the lead to second at the final race of the year.

After the Barber Dodge Pro Series, Morley briefly tried his hand at stock car racing in the ARCA series, before settling into endurance sports cars where he still competes today. He can be found racing in the TCR class of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge in the #61 Simply Vegas Audi RS3.

When he isn’t racing, Morley keeps a busy schedule coaching other aspiring drivers and running his golf league, the Mediocre Golf Association.

Mia has been around and worked with cars her entire life, starting her career with Volvo back home in Sweden at 19 years of age. She held a number of positions including as a car builder before training and becoming a Manufacturing Engineer in the early 90’s.

In the mid 90’s she went to work for TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) as an engineer where eventually she ended up leading a small team of Manufacturing Engineers and amongst other things built the process and factory to build and assemble the Renault Clio V6 before retiring to accompany and supporting her husband in his Automotive career.

Having always dreamt of motor racing as a young girl but unable to afford the time and money at the time, her dream was about to become reality when her husband suggested they start racing historic cars together as a hobby. They did their first race together at Silverstone in 2014 sharing a 1963 Lotus Elan in Classic K CSCC. Mia and her husband still race historic cars together and have enjoyed many class wins including at Spa.

In the same year (2014) Mia had the opportunity to do a track day in a McLaren 650S and after impressing her professional driver coach with her driving, decided to sign up for a Performance Academy session with McLaren. This was the beginning of what is now Flewitt Racing. Mia went from strength to strength and did her first McLaren 570S GT4 race in September 2017 finishing 4th. In 2018 she entered the newly established FIA Pure McLaren GT Series Championship where she competed all over Europe winning 5 out of 12 races and finishing on the podium in 6 of the remaining 7 races, taking the overall championship top spot for 2018.

In 2019 Mia returned to the FIA Pure McLaren GT Series Championship to defend her title, and did so in dramatic fashion, clinching the series championship at Bahrain International Circuit.  Mia is the reigning 2019 FIA Pure McLaren GT Series Champion.  In addition, Mia entered into three British GT Championship series events to broaden her experience and get used to racing big grids (40+ cars) where she excelled and came away with the class win at each event.  To finish the 2019 season, in December Mia took home a P2 Class finish with Balfe Motorsports in the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi Mia.

In 2020, Mia will join the highly anticipated McLaren 570S GT4 three-car entry in the British GT Championship series with Balfe Motorsports, teaming up with recently announced McLaren factory driver and ace, Euan Hankey, for the full season in the Pro/Am class.  Mia and Flewitt Racing will be competing for the championship win.
